FEMA Assistance Available

FEMA has announced that it will begin accepting applications for assistance at its toll free numbers: 1.800.621.FEMA (3362) or for the hearing and speech impaired 1.800.462.7585 (TTY).  The toll-free telephone numbers are available from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm (local time) Monday through Sunday until further notice.  Applicants for aid should be prepared to provide basic information about themselves (name, permanent address, phone number), insurance coverage and any other information to help substantiate losses. 

The type of assistance to be offered include: 

* rental assistance for temporary housing for those whose homes are unlivable. Initial assistance may be provided for up to three months for homeowenrs and at least one month for renters.   Assistance may be extended if requested after the intial period based on a reveiw of individual applicant requirements. 

*  grants or loans for home repairs (EVERYONE MUST FILL OUT THE SBA LOAN PAPER WORK TO QUALIFY FOR EITHER OPTION),

* grants to replace personal property and meet medical dental, funeral, transpotiton and other serous disaster-related needs not covered by insurance or other federal, state and charitable aid programs.

*  unemplouyment paymetns up to 26 weeks for workers who tempeorily lost jobs becasue of the disaster and who do not qualify for state benefits, such as self-employed.

IMpORTANT NOTE:  KEEP ALL RECIEPTS FOR EXPENSES RELATED TO YOUR RECOVERY FROM HURRICANE IKE.  FEMA will expect to see these.
